Richard Bob Greene

Some of the Bay Area's most renown and respected a cappella groups have joined forces for a concert to benefit the thousands of victims affected by the recent hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico. Among the Voices for Hurricane Relief is Richard Bob Greene, one of the founding members of the a cappella phonomenon The Bobs. A Grammy nominated arranger, composer, educator, engineer/producer and singer/instrumentalist, Greene has been lauded (or some might say blamed) for his contributions that "fractured and reconstructed the rules for vocal music." Greene, a bass, is also known in American advertising history for being the voice of "Fall into the Gap."

The EDLOS (Excessive Decibel Levels from Outer Space) are the original Bad Boys of A Cappella, but they are all also classically trained singers. When the EDLOS put on a show, it's not just standing and singing—their assorted mayhem makes an unforgetable performance. They are known for their strong sense of comedy, but also boast a diverse repertoire, ranging from classical to modern rock and everything in between.

Also appearing will be Clockwork, first runners-up in the highly competitive Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival in 2004. Clockwork describes themselves as "a quintet of musicians who happen to sing," performing their own arrangements of jazz from standards to be-bop and filled with interesting, unexpected surprises. In addition to being experienced performers, Clockwork, individually and collectively, has extensive experience hosting and participating in educational workshops. This is their second hurricane benefit in October.

On the bill will be Primarily A Cappella recording artists Solstice, a female vocal ensemble specializing both in music written by women and for women's voices. Their music spans many different genres, including classical, world, pop, jazz, and gospel, as well as new works for female voices. The group regularly compose, commission, and arrange new songs, and as performers they are in great demand. The six-woman group includes classically trained singers, a rising rock and roll star, a professional trombone player and two public interest lawyers.

The Richter Scales are a "bevy of gentlemen songsters" that perform selections from a wide variety of genres, including American standards, Broadway, Motown, and contemporary music. Trained in the collegiate a cappella tradition, the group's size ranges from fourteen to five (usually the loudest five).

One of Each was formed in July 2002 and, so they claim, "has been performing in coffee shops and bus shelters, spitting on and occasionally entertaining audiences around the Bay Area" at every opportunity. The group was invited to perform two consecutive years in the showcase presentations at the annual West Coast A Cappella Summit, and won first place in the Ensemble category of the 2003 San Francisco Cabaret competition.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to the hurricane relief efforts of the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. Tickets are $20 in advance and may be purchased from Unity of Berkeley. On the day of the show only—if there are seats available—tickets will be $22 at the door, or $20 for students with ID.
